Bethany McDonnell – Quality Control

After finishing my A-levels I decided that I wanted to start my career by undertaking an apprenticeship within the science sector. I decided to apply to Consort Medical as I was told they are one of the best employees in my area for apprenticeships. During the interview I met the team and had a tour of the labs; my heart became set on working at Consort. Upon hearing I got the job I was so enthusiastic and couldn’t wait to start.

“In my role integrity is the most important value”

After 18 months as an apprentice laboratory technician I took on a new role and progressed to Analytical Technical Officer. Every day is different due to the constantly changing environment. Currently, I am doing routine testing as well as performing the weekly and monthly checks.

The main challenges are meeting deadlines and adapting to varying priorities but it gives me great satisfaction when I can hit or exceed our deadlines. My proudest achievement would be from an outward-bound trip I engaged in as part of a STEM apprenticeship scheme; I had to jump off a 5M high bridge into a river!

“Very few people my age can say they are doing their dream job and are thoroughly enjoying what they do”

I am very lucky because as a child I always wanted to work in science and from the age of 17 I have been living my dream. Working in a small team provides opportunity to develop a broad range of skills; helped by a friendly supportive team. At Consort Medical I have progressed enormously; every day is a school day and I am continuously increasing my knowledge.
